RUSA Route #2719 "Bahn-Mi 300K".
The 2025 Spring 300K revives a long-time favorite route up to Camano Island featuring sound views, roads less traveled, and slightly fewer hills than years past. Like any early season ride, the weather can be a challenge so prepare accordingly. From U Village we head north through Ravenna and Greenlake then onto the Interurban bike path up to Everett. We then meander northwest past Marysville and Lake Goodwin to Stanwood, then heading west to circumnavigate Camano Island with stunning sound views, forested roads, and a staffed control at Camano Island State Park: bring your appetite! After arriving back at Stanwood we head toward Bryant, passing through a pretty, calm valley where you may spot some bald eagles. You're soon onto the Centennial trail to Snohomish; over familiar roads to Woodinville, then mostly bike paths and quiet neighboorhood roads to the 520 bridge overpass, rolling home to U Village. We will finish at Eureka! (open til midnight with control nearby until close at 2am.)
2025 Pre-Ride Notes by Carl Lind
The departure from U Village goes south, to the SW exit onto 25th Ave NE. Familiar roads take us through Ravenna and Greenlake to Fremont Ave N and the Interurban trail. Your first major traffic will be on SE 128th/SR 96. As the road bends to the right beside McCullum Park, be on the lookout for a collapsed stormwater grate beside the curb that could swallow a bike wheel.
After the left turn onto Seattle Hill Road, the next slight left onto 51st Ave SE comes up quickly. A few of the pre-riders almost missed it.
The descent to Lowell Larimer Rd now has a round-about for added enjoyment. A control awaits at the bottom. Lowell Larimer carried a steady stream of traffic on the Saturday that we rode.
The passage through Everett is uneventful and easy to follow. Leaving Everett, accessing the trail onto the Hewitt Avenue Trestle from Hewitt Avenue can be tricky. Look for the 5' wide path onto the traffic island marked by solid white lines. If you stay on the street, you will have to make a U-turn around a solid median to get back to the path.
After the pleasant roll through Ebey Slough, the short section on SR204 calls for extra caution. Riders must first move right across a high-speed onramp and then back left into the turn lane for Sunnyside Blvd SE. This no-shoulder road carries a lot of traffic.
The ride through Marysville is pleasant with wide shoulders.
The route west of I-5 begins with a few miles with minimal shoulders. This rider welcomed the left turn onto McRae Rd NW and its climb into calmer environs. After a pleasant tour around Lake Goodwin we join Marine Dr with its higher level of traffic bound for Stanwood.
Stanwood offers plenty of refueling options. The QFC is to the left mid-way through town. But keep moving because the main event awaits.
After the climb up 532 onto Camano, the right turn on N. Good Rd is the start of miles of great riding. Riders of previous 300 Bahn-Mi brevets may lament that we no longer take the spur to English Boom Park. Or not.
If you rode through Stanwood without refueling, Huntington's Corner Grocery, after the climb out of Utsalady, offers your standard rando fare.
Following a pleasant tour south, we have a few lumps before a steep drop to the water and the Bahn-Mi break.
You are not yet half-way through, so don't linger too long. More Camano hills await, but many are short and allow you to carry your speed from the preceding descent.
After exiting the island, our group of pre-riders refueled in Stanwood since the route avoids most options in Arlington.
But on to Arlington. After another short stint on Marine Dr, we hang a left onto Norman Rd, a bucolic biway along the lower Stillaguamish offering a rich olfactory experience of this dairying community.
After crossing I-5 and a few miles of Arlington sprawl we find ourselves back on the familiar Centennial trail to Snohomish followed by the three bumps to Woodinville. Rest up on the flat ride along the Sammamish to Redmond because a little bit of climbing awaits before dropping down onto the 520 bridge for the final stretch back to U-Village.
Enjoy the ride!
